One of the things new EFURC players try first is the “Mythic stack” — pack as many Legendary Mythics as the deck limit allows into a 30-card deck and call it good.
It feels intuitive. More powerful cards = more powerful deck. Right?
It is wrong. Here is why.
The v0.1 deck rules
From the EFURC v0.1 design doc:
- Deck size: exactly 30 cards
- Max copies of any card: 3
- Primary faction OR neutral: at least 12 cards
- Essence cost curve: starts at 1 Essence on turn 1, +1 per turn (max 9)
So a 30-card deck with max-3-of-any-card has at most 10 unique cards. With the 12-card faction minimum, you can run at most 18 cards off-faction if you want, but the deck loses deck-thinning and synergy.
The math against stacking Legendaries
Let us say you build an Alliance deck with 3 of every Legendary Mythic in the v0.1 pool. Assume 3 Legendaries x 3 copies each = 9 cards. You have 21 slots left.
But your Essence curve starts at 1 Essence per turn. Most Legendary Mythics cost 5+ Essence. You can not play them before turn 5. If your 21 filler cards are mostly low-Essence units, your hand by turn 5 is:
- Turn 1: 1 Essence -> 1-cost unit
- Turn 2: 2 Essence -> 2-cost unit
- Turn 3: 3 Essence -> 3-cost unit
- Turn 4: 4 Essence -> 4-cost unit
- Turn 5: 5 Essence -> finally, your first Mythic
That is 4 turns of low-Essence units before your Mythic resolves. If your opponent is running a tight 2-Essence curve with removal spells, you are losing board by turn 4 and your Mythic arrives too late.
What actually wins v0.1
Playtest data from the locked v0.1 pool shows the winning Alliance decks run:
- 12–14 Alliance units (the faction minimum)
- 2–3 spells (the right ones for the matchup)
- 1–2 of one specific Legendary (the one that wins your matchup)
- The rest: low-Essence curve units that contest the early board
That is a 30-card deck with 1 Legendary in it. Sometimes 2. Almost never 3.
The deck does not win because it has the most powerful cards. It wins because it has the right cards at the right Essence costs for the right turns.
The deck-builder suggestion engine
The v0.1 server includes a DeckBuilder:suggest(faction) API that returns a ready-made starter deck per faction. The suggestions are not optimized — they are calibrated to teach the curve. If you start from the suggestion, swap one card at a time, and re-playtest each swap, you will learn the curve in 5–10 games.
That is the path. Not Mythic stacking.
The exception: combo decks
There is one archetype that does run higher Legendary density: combo decks that win by chaining two specific Legendaries. These exist in the v0.1 pool but they are fragile — if either Legendary gets answered, the combo breaks. They are also slow — most combo turns land on turn 7 or later.
If you want to play combo, plan for a 40–60 percent win rate in the current meta. That is the v0.1 reality.
What this means for new players
Three things:
1. Start from the suggested deck. Do not freestyle your first 30 cards.
2. Swap one card at a time. Each swap teaches you something.
3. Track your Essence curve. If your hand by turn 4 is full of 5+ Essence cards, your curve is broken.
