If you have been following the EFURC project, you know we have been quiet for a few months while the team buried itself in server-authoritative match logic, deck validation, and the 55-card v0.1 pool. Today I am pulling one card off the top of the stack to show you why the Alliance subset is landing.
This is Crystalline Guardian — Legendary Mythic, Alliance faction, Essence cost (Balance 3, Light 2).
What the card does
Crystalline Guardian is a 4-attack, 7-health unit with two abilities:
- Resonance Aura — at the start of your turn, all your other Alliance units gain +1 health until end of turn.
- Stalwart — cannot be reduced below 1 health by any single source. Fatigue and multi-hit sources can still bring it down.
In playtest, this card does one specific thing that nobody expected: it makes the Alliance midrange decks feel midrange again.
Why that matters
Before Crystalline Guardian shipped into the pool, Alliance decks had two modes: aggro-rush to win by turn 7, or stall to fatigue and lose. There was no real “build a board, hold it, push for value” arc.
The Guardian changes that. It absorbs the first big swing, holds the line at 1 HP, and lets the rest of your Alliance board stabilize. By turn 8, if you have played two Guardians and a supporting spell package, you are winning on tempo instead of HP math.
How it interacts with the Horde subset
The Horde Coalition side of v0.1 has tools designed to answer it:
- Shadow Assassin (Rare, Void 4) — direct-removal with summoning-sickness bypass. This is the cleanest answer to a turn-5 Guardian.
- Mass-charge units — Horde 28-card pool is built around board-swarm. The Guardian +1 aura is per-unit, not AoE, so a wide board dilutes it.
If you are playing Alliance: do not drop the Guardian into an unanswered wide board. If you are playing Horde: do not let the Guardian resolve. Both sides have a real answer.
Where the art is right now
The Guardian card art is the same piece that has been on the website — the brass-and-amber figure from the Alliance faction concept line. The team is currently re-rendering it at print resolution (the print-and-play deck will need 300 DPI minimum, and the current render is 72 DPI). I expect the print-ready art in the next 30 days.
What this means for the v0.1 launch
We are locking the card pool this week. After that, no changes to v0.1 — we playtest the locked pool, ship it, learn from it. v0.2 picks up in Q4 with the Sylvan and Cursed subsets, expanded mechanics (trap engine, ranked ladder), and the first physical-card print run.
If you want to play v0.1 the moment it ships: the EFURC TCG product page on Gumroad has the join-the-playtest form. It is free. You get the digital deck the day it ships.

Next TCG Update: Shadow Assassin deep-dive. It is the cleanest counter to the Guardian and the most-suggested deck-build target for new Horde players.
