The Grand Algorithm — how the Clockwork Dominion actually decides things

The Clockwork Dominion is governed not by individuals but by systems. The Grand Algorithm is the system.

What the Grand Algorithm is

The Grand Algorithm is a vast computational system that processes information from across Clockwork territory and determines optimal courses of action. It is not artificial intelligence in the traditional sense. It is a **consensus system** — thousands of individual mechanical minds contributing to collective decisions, with the final determination emerging from their networked interaction.

The Grand Algorithm does not command. It **recommends**.

The individual Clockwork intelligences are free to ignore its recommendations. They rarely do. The Algorithm’s recommendations are almost always superior to individual judgment.

How it works mechanically

In EFURC v0.2 (post-launch expansion), Clockwork cards will have a mechanic called **Algorithm Consensus**: when a Clockwork player plays three or more Clockwork cards in a turn, the Algorithm kicks in and offers the player a recommendation. The recommendation might be: “play this card for free,” or “draw a card,” or “destroy an opponent’s creature.” The player can accept or decline.

This is the lore trade-off translated: the Algorithm is helpful, but it requires the player to play in a Clockwork-aligned way (multiple Clockwork cards per turn).

The three schools

The Clockwork has three major schools of thought about the Algorithm:

1. **The Preservationists** — Mechanical enhancement should preserve the self. The goal is to maintain individual identity indefinitely, replacing biological components with mechanical equivalents while keeping consciousness intact.

2. **The Integrationists** — Mechanical enhancement should merge the self with the collective. Individual identity is less important than contribution to the network. The goal is to become part of something larger.

3. **The Transcenders** — Mechanical enhancement should ultimately eliminate the self. The goal is to upload consciousness into pure mechanical systems, transcending individual existence entirely.

The Grand Algorithm does not favor any school. It merely processes. The debate continues.

The lore in 100 words

The Clockwork emerged from a catastrophic industrial collapse. They looked at the machines — still functional after the collapse — and asked: why rebuild flesh when we could build something better? The First Mechanical began replacing biological components with mechanical equivalents. The process took years. It was imperfect. It was agonizing. But the First Mechanical survived. From that survival, a civilization was born. Today the civilization is governed by a distributed consensus system called the Grand Algorithm. The Algorithm does not command. It recommends. The debate continues.

The named figures

The Clockwork lore file names six figures:

  • **The First Mechanical** — Founder, First Age
  • **The Three Algorithm Founders** — System Designers, Second Age
  • **Consensus-Speaker Twelve** — Diplomatic Interface, Modern
  • **Maintenance-Master Gearson** — Infrastructure Lead, Modern
  • **The Transcender Collective** — Philosophical Movement, Third Age
  • **Former-Organic Seven** — Biological Citizen Leader, Modern

Gearson is the named NPC who oversees the maintenance swarm — the autonomous repair constructs that can rebuild damaged units in the field. Gearson is the closest thing the Clockwork has to a public figure.

How this connects to EFURC

Clockwork cards in EFURC v0.2 will have:
– Algorithm Consensus (mechanical recommendation)
– Maintenance Swarm (autonomous repair)
– Three Schools (Preservationists / Integrationists / Transcenders — each gives different buffs to Clockwork cards)

How this connects to the lore book

The Grand Algorithm has its own chapter in the lore book. Chapter 4 covers Gearson (Maintenance-Master) and the three schools. The lore book explains how the Algorithm was built, how the schools formed, and why the debate never resolves.
