Doctrine

The Clockwork military doctrine is built on efficiency. Biological soldiers are imperfect. They tire. They fear. They make mistakes. Mechanical constructs require only maintenance — and maintenance can be performed by other mechanical systems. The Clockwork does not fight wars of attrition. They fight precision engagements: surgical strikes against high-value targets, followed by rapid withdrawal. The Grand Algorithm processes battlefield information faster than any biological mind and recommends optimal actions. Individual Clockwork intelligences are free to ignore its recommendations, but they rarely do.

History

The first Clockwork emerged from a catastrophic industrial collapse — a great engine failure that destroyed the central territories of what was then the Iron Confederacy. Most survivors rebuilt. A minority looked at the ruins and saw the machines — still functional after the collapse. They asked: why rebuild flesh when we could build something better? The founder, known only as the First Mechanical, began replacing biological components with mechanical equivalents. The process took years. It was imperfect. It was agonizing. But the First Mechanical survived. From that survival, a civilization was born. Today the Clockwork controls the Mechanist Plateau, the most technologically advanced region in the world.

How it plays in EFER

Construct swarm. The Clockwork gameplay revolves around networked units, shared sensor data, and instantaneous essence-pulse synchronization. A thousand constructs can move as one — not through verbal communication but through essence-synchronization. Mechanically: cheap units with strong synergy buffs, structure permanents, late-game scaling. Counter-play: board-clearing AoE (wipes the construct swarm) and direct removal on key constructs (the +1/+1 aura is per-construct, not AoE).
