What makes a faction stick — the design of faction identity

There are 22 canon factions in the Eternal Fusion universe. Seven of them ship at EFER launch. Twenty-two is too many for a v1. Seven is the sweet spot. This is why.

The launch faction rule

Every launch faction must have:
– A unique visual identity (palette + silhouette)
– A unique gameplay loop (the faction plays differently)
– A unique lore hook (a story the player wants to be part of)
– A unique home realm (a territory the faction can claim)
– A unique NPC (a face the faction has)

If a faction cannot clear all five bars, it does not ship at launch.

The seven

Alliance — Balance + Light. Defenders of order. Gold-on-navy. Aeldric Vaelion.

Horde — Chaos + Void. Warbands. Blood-red + bone. Korgax the Unbroken.

Sylvan — Nature + Balance. Deepwood wardens. Deep green + amber. Kalina.

Clockwork — Technology + Balance + Collective. Automatons. Brass + oil-black. Gearson.

Arctic Union — Water + Consciousness. Frozen tacticians. Pale blue + white.

Eastern Union — Technology + Balance + Consciousness. Dragon riders. Indigo + silver.

Cursed — Void + Persistence. The Marked. Black + sickly green. Kethras.

Why seven

Three is too few (every game has 2–3 factions, no differentiation).

Eleven is too many (the player cannot remember all the visual identities).

Seven is enough that each one feels distinct, few enough that the player can learn them all.

What makes them stick

A faction sticks when the player can describe it in one sentence.

Alliance: “Defenders of order.”
Horde: “Strength is the only truth.”
Sylvan: “We are the forest.”
Clockwork: “We are the gears.”
Arctic Union: “We remember the winters.”
Eastern Union: “We ride the dragons.”
Cursed: “We survived the Void.”

Seven sentences. Seven identities. The player can hold all seven in working memory.

The post-launch roster

After launch, the roster expands. Each post-launch faction enters scope when the gameplay loop is designed. The order of entry is decided by:
– Visual distinctness from existing factions
– Lore hook strength
– Mechanical fit with the existing systems
– Community demand (Discord votes, Reddit polls)

The first post-launch faction will be either Sylvan or Cursed. The community votes in Q4 2026.
