How I write a Steam review response (the 3-paragraph template)

Every negative Steam review gets a response from me. The template is 3 paragraphs. Total time: 5 minutes per response. Here is the template.

The 3-paragraph template

Paragraph 1: The thank-you (1 sentence)

Acknowledge the reviewer’s experience. Thank them for taking the time to write the review. Example: “Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback — sorry the demo did not hit the mark for you.”

Paragraph 2: The acknowledgment (2-3 sentences)

Acknowledge the specific issue they raised. Do not argue. Do not defend. Just acknowledge. Example: “You are right that the tutorial is too long. We have been working on cutting it down for the full release in January.”

Paragraph 3: The action (1-2 sentences)

Tell them what you are doing about it. Be specific. Example: “The v1.0 release will have a 4-minute tutorial instead of the current 8 minutes. Thank you for the feedback — it helped.”

Why this works

  1. Thank-you first. Reviewers who feel heard are less likely to update their review to be more negative.
  2. Acknowledgment second. Reviewers who feel their specific issue is acknowledged are more likely to update their review to be more positive (if you actually fix the issue).
  3. Action third. Reviewers who see a specific action plan are more likely to recommend the game to friends. The action is what turns a negative review into a positive word-of-mouth.

The math

78% of EFER’s 528 Steam reviews are positive. Of the 116 non-positive reviews, I have responded to 84 (72%). The response rate correlates with a 4% increase in positive review sentiment over the first 4 weeks post-launch. The math works.

What this means for your game

If you are launching a Steam game, respond to every negative review. The template is 3 paragraphs. The time is 5 minutes. The upside is a 4% positive-sentiment lift, which directly affects Steam algorithm ranking.
