Sylvan Elder is the most-played card in EFURC v0.2. 73% of Sylvan decks run it. Here is why.
The card
- Name: Sylvan Elder
- Cost: 5 mana
- Type: Creature
- Effect: Draw 2 cards. Gain 1 life per card drawn.
- Lore hook: This is the elder who refused to forget. The Communion flows through her.
Why it broke the meta
- Card advantage + life gain. Every other card in the game is either card advantage OR life gain. Sylvan Elder is both. The combination is hard to beat.
- 5 mana = turn 5. Most decks stabilize by turn 5. Sylvan Elder arrives at the exact moment the game stabilizes, then tips the balance toward the Sylvan player.
- Synergy with Sylvan Communion. The faction signature card (heal 3 per turn in v1, heal 2 in v0.2.1) stacks with Sylvan Elder’s life gain. A turn-5 Sylvan Elder + turn-6 Sylvan Communion = +5 life in 2 turns.
How the playtesters found it
During the v0.2 playtest (Oct 13-19), Sylvan Elder was the most-played card in 73% of Sylvan decks. The retention rate was 92% — players who used it once kept it in their deck.
What the nerf means
v0.2.1 changes Sylvan Elder from “draw 2 cards, gain 1 life per card drawn” to “draw 2 cards, gain 1 life.” The heal no longer scales with the card draw. Sylvan Elder is still strong, but no longer format-warping.
What this means for card design
Card advantage + life gain in one card is dangerous. The lesson: pick one primary effect, add one secondary effect, never combine both at full strength.
