Lore book Chapter 5: How the Clockwork learned to transcend

The Clockwork faction was almost cut from the game. Chapter 5 is what kept them in.

The problem

In the original draft, the Clockwork were a faction of robots who served the Aeldric. That is a faction description, not a story. Every fantasy game has robot-servants.

The pivot

The pivot came when I asked: what would a person have to believe to choose to become a machine?

The answer was transcendence — the belief that the flesh is a prison, and that the soul can only be free when it lives in metal.

Chapter 5

Chapter 5 follows Maren, a Clockwork artificer who invented the procedure that lets a person transfer their consciousness into a mechanical body. She did it to her brother after he was dying of Void-corruption. He begged her to do it.

The Clockwork are not machines. They are a people who decided the machine body was worth the price.

Why this matters

This chapter reframes the entire Clockwork faction. They are not robots. They are the faction that decided the body is temporary and the soul is permanent. Every gear, every piston, every whirring clock is a memorial to the choice they made.
