The Roblox Studio defaults are a trap. They look fine for a 10-minute game jam. They kill a 3-year project.
The defaults I deleted
- Default character mesh — replaced with a custom rig (15x the polygon budget, no clipping)
- Default lighting — replaced with a custom lighting rig (shadows that actually matter)
- Default sound library — replaced with a custom sound library (no more “Roblox error” jokes in trailers)
- Default UI font — replaced with a custom display font (the difference between “Roblox game” and “published title”)
- Default camera script — replaced with a custom camera (orbital, damping, smooth interpolation)
Why
Defaults are training wheels. They keep you on the bike. They also keep you from ever learning to ride.
How
I replaced one default per week. Every Monday. By month 6, the game looked like a different studio had built it.
What this means for EFER
EFER looks like a published Roblox title, not a Roblox project. That is the difference between a player spending 30 seconds and a player telling their friends.
See what the new lighting rig made possible in the Sylvan Canopy.
