Why the Cursed are called the Marked

In the Eternal Fusion canon, the fourteenth faction has two names. Everyone else in the world calls them the Cursed. They call themselves the Marked — the Marked of the Void, when they are being formal about it.

The gap between those names is the entire faction.

What the outsiders mean

“Cursed” is a diagnosis from the outside. It means: the Void touched you, therefore something is wrong with you, therefore keep your distance. It is a word for a victim or a contaminant. It flattens the faction into what happened to them.

What they mean

The Marked is a claim. The Void touched them — that much is fact. The event is called the Touching, and the survivors came out of it carrying marks: fragments of knowledge, residue, proof of contact. The Void did not destroy them. It left something on them, and they lived.

Their doctrine states it outright: “We are not the Void’s victims. We are its survivors.”

That is why the name matters. “Cursed” makes the Void the author of their story. “Marked” makes them the authors — the mark is evidence of survival, a scar that carries knowledge. Their essence pairing says the same thing mechanically: primary Void, secondary Persistence. Not Chaos. Not corruption. Endurance in contact with the thing that should have ended them.

The Marked Expanse

Their realm is the Cursed Marked Expanse — even the realm carries both names, the outsider’s word and their own, fused into one place. A borderland where Void contact is not history but geography.

The split inside

The Marked are not unified about what survival means, and canon holds the tension rather than resolving it.

Isolationists argue the marks make them a danger or a target — survival means withdrawing behind the Expanse’s borders and letting the world believe the “cursed” story if it keeps the world away.

Warners argue the opposite: the Touching was not the end of anything, and what the Void left in them is intelligence the other twenty-one factions will need. Survival means carrying the warning outward — being the faction that knows, whether the world wants to know or not.

Both positions are canon. Neither is the answer yet.

Why it matters for the world

Every other faction relates to the Void through doctrine, distance, or ambition. The Marked relate to it through experience. They are the only faction whose origin is contact — and whose continued existence is the argument that contact is survivable. When the Void Borders become a front line, the faction that was “cursed” by it is the faction holding the knowledge.
