The Canopy, in the Sylvan’s own words

4 min read

Ask an outsider what the Sylvan worship and they will say “the forest”. Ask a Sylvan and they will correct you, patiently, the way they correct everything: the forest is not worshipped, and the Canopy is not a god.

The Canopy is what the Sylvan call the forest’s collective consciousness — the awareness that lives in the root networks under the soil, in the fungal threads that bind tree to tree, in the biological systems that span the whole woodland. It does not command. It does not judge. It is simply aware — of everything that happens beneath its leaves, of the creatures within it, of every threat and every opening the forest meets.

Communion

The Sylvan reach the Canopy through a practice called Communion — a meditative state where a Sylvan extends their own awareness into the root network and feels what the forest feels.

Through Communion a Sylvan can sense events anywhere in the forest, feel the emotional state of other Sylvan, reach memories the forest has stored in its living systems, and receive guidance from its collective wisdom. Outsiders hear that list and think “telepathy network” or “nature god answering prayers”. Both readings are wrong in the same way: they imagine the Canopy as a thing that talks back. It is closer to standing in a current — the knowledge is there because the forest is there, and touching it is touching everything the forest already knows.

The cost nobody mentions

Communion is not free, and the price is the most quietly alarming thing in Sylvan life: individuality. The deeper a Sylvan goes into the shared awareness, the less distinct they become — from the forest, and from each other. Elders who have spent decades in deep Communion sometimes struggle to remember where they end and the forest begins.

This is why the Sylvan think in centuries and shrug at ownership. It is not philosophy they adopted; it is what is left after you have felt, literally, that the boundary between people is thinner than everyone else believes. Their patience, their reciprocity ethics, their non-possessive values — all of it is downstream of Communion. They do not share because they are generous. They share because they already know what it is to be shared.

The geography of the mind

The forest itself is not one undifferentiated mass, and neither is the Canopy. The Sylvan map it the way they map the woodland:

  • The Heartwood — the ancient center, where trees have stood for millennia. The Canopy is strongest here; the connection is almost unmediated.
  • The Green Belt — the younger ring where most Sylvan live. Close enough to feel the Canopy, far enough to remain people.
  • The Edge — the contested boundary where forest meets plain and mountain. Where the Canopy is weakest and the world pushes in.
  • The Shadow Glen — the lightless, twisted quarter. Not evil — simply grown in different conditions. Outsiders find it unsettling. The Sylvan find that reaction unsettling.

A Sylvan raised in the Green Belt and a Sylvan raised at the Heartwood edge are shaped by different depths of the same awareness — which is why even the Sylvan do not fully agree about what the Canopy wants, or whether “wanting” is even the right word.

Why it matters beyond the lore page

The Canopy is the reason the Sylvan faction plays the way it does. A people whose awareness is distributed through living systems do not experience loss the way other factions do — what dies returns, what is cut down regrows. If you have met Regrow on the EFURC board and wondered why the forest faction’s hero gives back dead units: this is why. The mechanic is the lore.

Read the full faction entry on the site for the rest — the elders’ oath, the Shadow Glen, and what the Sylvan remember that no one else was alive to see.
