The Sylvan faction almost became generic tree-people. Chapter 3 is what saved them.
The original draft
In the first draft of the lore book, the Sylvan were “the forest guardians who live in the Canopy.” That is a faction description, not a story. It is the kind of lore you write when you have not yet figured out what the faction actually wants.
The breakthrough
The breakthrough came when I asked: what is the Sylvan terrified of losing?
The answer was The Communion — the shared memory-network that every Sylvan is born connected to. The Canopy is the physical place where it lives. The Communion is what makes it sacred.
The choice
Chapter 3 is the story of the Sylvan elder Vaelith, who had to choose between severing her connection to the Communion to save her daughter, or letting her daughter die to preserve the network.
She chose to remember.
Why this matters
This chapter reframes the entire Sylvan faction. They are not tree-guardians. They are a people who have chosen, every day, to remember what they would rather forget. The Canopy is the architecture of that choice.
