EFEMM hits v0.5.4 — what the match-3 learned from the RPG

There is a third game in the Eternal Fusion family that this site has barely talked about. Time to fix that. EFEMM — Eternal Fusion: Essence Match Masters — is a match-3 RPG on Unreal Engine 5.8, it is the current top-priority project, and it just crossed version 0.5.4. This post is the introduction it should have had months ago, plus the one design lesson that made it work.

What EFEMM actually is

An 8×8 match-3 board fused with strategic deckbuilding. You bring a deck, the board feeds it, matches drive combat, and the whole thing shares the Eternal Fusion canon — the same 22 factions, the same 9 essences, the same world as EFER and EFURC. Not a spin-off skin: the same universe, played differently.

The mandate when the project got greenlit was a single sentence: make the best EFEMM game ever. The constraint was equally blunt — a fresh start in UE5, not a port of the browser prototype that proved the loop.

The thing it learned from the RPG

Here is the part that surprised me. When you strip an RPG down to a puzzle board, you would expect the world to go with it. The opposite happened: the RPG systems are what made the match-3 worth building.

**Faction identity imported whole.** EFEMM does not have “red gems and green gems”. It has the same 22 canon factions EFER uses — the same IDs, the same lore, the same essences behind them. The Horde plays aggressive on the board the same way it plays aggressive in the RPG, because the faction is the mechanic.

**Deckbuilding is loadout.** An RPG asks what you carry into the fight. EFEMM asks the same question with a deck: 22 faction starter decks exist already, and choosing one is choosing how your board converts into damage.

**The campaign is a quest structure.** Chapter 1 is a 12-node run — same shape as an RPG chapter, compressed into matches instead of dungeons.

**And the discipline carried over too.** EFURC proved the oracle pattern — a Python port of the rules that the engine must match, locked by a test suite. EFEMM runs the same architecture: efemm_core is the canonical game logic, 268 tests green, every save reproducible from seed + action log + state hash. When the engine disagrees with the oracle, the engine is wrong. That rule has caught more bugs than any playtest.

Where v0.5.4 sits

The version number undersells it, so here is the honest state: UE 5.8 with a real C++ source layer, the Match3RPGTemplate foundation fully absorbed (193 template assets rebranded rather than rebuilt from zero — the greenlight doc was explicit that greenfielding was the trap), the card layer sharing V4 visuals with EFURC while keeping its own rules and data model, and a per-faction deck builder wired to all 22 factions.

What is next

The honest answer is: the board. The systems underneath are the most tested thing I have ever built — but a match-3 lives or dies on how the board feels in the hand, and that is a knob-turning problem, not a test-suite problem. The 12-node campaign gives it structure; the next milestones are all feel.

If you have only ever seen the site through EFER or EFURC, EFEMM is the third pillar — the puzzle game that kept its RPG heart.
